“You have to impose yourself. If you don’t speak, no one will hear. This is what my family taught me, since I was a little girl. Do not fall silent.”
Maria de los Angeles is taking on a big challenge: representing the women and men of her community in their fight for access to water in the state of Oaxaca, in central Mexico.
It all started many years ago, when her father, having health issues, mandated her to attend community meetings. Ever since, Maria has been actively involved in the community, especially on water issues.
As a woman farmer, whose life depends, month after month, on her harvest, Maria knows very well how important water is.
“I came to realize that water is a common good, a natural resource for indigenous people like us and, most of all, a human right. Water is life, from birth to death.”
With the help of Oxfam Mexico and a local partner organisation, in addition to fighting for their rights, Maria and her community have been setting up water tanks and wells, to make their right to access water a reality.
