27 year old Federica comes from Ancone, but lives on the Belgian coast, where she demonstrated for the climate. What brought this young Italian to Ostend?
“I have been in Belgium for three years; I don’t really know if there was a demonstration in Italy too, but one thing is sure: I didn’t want to miss this meeting in Ostend. I am not an activist; I don’t work for an NGO or for an organisation which fights against climate change. In fact, I work for a restaurant; but this doesn’t matter. I feel it is really important to be here; it is already too late to stop climate change completely, but we can still limit it and, political decision makers need to accept responsibility. That‘s why I am here, to remind them of that.”
Amidst more than 10,000 people who demonstrated at Ostende, Federica stands up for her values and those of her family.
“My grandparents were farmers; they always lived off the land and taught my parents and me to respect nature. Their livelihoods were dependent on nature. Protecting nature is therefore part of our family heritage. For my part, I do small things on a daily basis, like recycling waste or consuming organic products. These are the small things which can make a big difference once lots of people start doing them.”
